Cataract

What is Cataract?

Cataract is an eye condition that results in loss of transparency of the natural lens inside the eye and consequently reduced vision. 90% develops depending on progressive age. But it can be seen in any age group including babies. It loses its transparency, the lens becomes dull, its color changes, it becomes like frosted glass and the patient’s vision decreases gradually. It is one of the leading causes of blindness that can be treated in the world.

What are the causes of cataract?

The most important cause of cataract is old age. Apart from old age, penetrating, incisive and blunt traumas, certain medications (cortisone medications) and diabetes can also cause cataracts. Cataract can also be seen in infancy and childhood. The most important factor in congenital cataracts is the mother’s infections such as rubella during pregnancy.

What are the Symptoms of Cataract?

A patient with a cataract sees shadows where he looks, and colors are perceived as difficult or faded. Night vision impairment is more pronounced. Particularly at night lights, the incidence of movement increases. There are also symptoms such as double vision, amorphous and blurred vision, loss of depth, eye fatigue and headache due to developing astigmata.

Cataract Treatment

There is no medication for cataracts. The only treatment is surgery. The opaque lens, which loses its transparency by surgery, is replaced with an artificial lens and the patient is again able to see well.

Although cataract surgery is technologically advanced today, there are some complications that cannot be prevented by human hand. In order to avoid these complications, the doctor’s experience is of great importance. Today, a period of revolutionary cataract treatment with laser has begun in eye surgery.

The surgery, which is used in the treatment of cataract and which is known as “phaco arasında by using the classical knife and ultrasound energy, is nowadays replaced by; left to the eye without a hand ‘femtosecond laser’ technology performed by modern cataract surgery. Femtosecond Laser technology enables the most important stages of cataract surgery to be performed under computer control without touching the hand and shortens the healing process and enables safer surgery.

In cataract surgery with
femtosecond laser

  • Intraocular cuts are made with laser instead of knife, no knife is used at any stage of the surgery,
  • The anterior membrane of the eyepiece is not peeled by hand, but by laser peeling (capsulorhexis), the possibility of slipping the intraocular lens is eliminated,
  • Instead of ultrasound energy, the cataract lens is cut into small pieces by laser,
  • In this process, where the use of ultrasound is almost eliminated, faster recovery is achieved and better visual quality is achieved.
  • One of the most important advantages of cataract surgery performed with the help of femtosecond laser is the perfect creation of the housing of the new lens to be put into the eye. This means that the intraocular lens worn during surgery will stand in the most ideal position and show the best refractive performance.

Is it possible to get rid of cataracts and glasses in one operation?

Cataract surgery is replaced with a new lens discharged. In addition to cataracts, myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism and presbyopia can be corrected with a single operation by means of special intraocular lenses that are multi-focused (multifocal lens) and eliminate astigmatism if necessary (toric lens), considering the patient’s need during the operation. Thus, the patient’s dependence on glasses is very reduced or can be completely eliminated.
